Heading to Michigan we knew we were going to surprise Kate’s family with the house purchase, we just weren’t sure how it was going to go down. It actually went down perfectly, considering how crazy it all came together.
We worked a deal to go ahead and close on the house the day we arrived. That’s a 14-day close, by the way, on this sight-unseen house. We worked out a rough schedule to get picked up at the airport by whichever family member was available and we had a cover story about having a tight schedule to meet someone about a wedding venue. Of course flights got delayed and traffic was horrible and the schedule fell apart.
Sitting in car in traffic, Kate and I were starting to worry. By 4:45 we were 30 minutes out, and we were never going to make the signing, so Kate and I texted with Eric the realtor and revised the plan. Quietly, we e-signed the deal from the car. We stuck with the cover story about the wedding venue and called Kate’s mom and asked her to meet us there. This just might work out after all.
We all arrived at the property within minutes of each other and told the we had a surprise. The response to “we have a surprise” was was a) you eloped? or b) you’re pregnant? Nope, we’ve done something way dumber than that. We’ve bought this house. Oh, and this is the first time for us to see it, too!
